Index-number
The index-number is the number used in Annex VI to the CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008). The entries in Annex VI are listed according to the atomic number of the element that is the most characteristic of the substances's properties. The Index-number for each substance is in the form of a digit sequence of the the type ABC-RST-VW-Y, where:
- ABC is either the atomic number of the most characteristic chemical element or the most characteristic organic group in the molecule (preceeded by one or two zeros to make up the sequence);
- RST is the consecutive number of the substance in the series ABC;
- VW denotes the form in which the substance is produced or placed on the market;
- Y is the check-digit calculated in accordance with the ISBN (International Standard Book Number) method.
The Index-number is only assigned to substances with a harmonized classification according to the CLP Regulation.
A number of explanatory notes can be added to the Index-number.
