Bacteria
At present there are no official (governmental, Health Based advice limits) Occupational Exposure Limits set for Bacteria, as far as we know. In the literature, there are some suggested limits. But they do not have a formal status. In practice, the following rules of thumb are being used to describe exposure levels of groups of bacteria:
- a concentration of all Gram-positive bacteria together (Total Gram-positive bacteria)
- a concentration of a particular species or group of Gram-positive bacteria
- a concentration of all Gram-negative bacteria together (because of the possible combined exposure to endotoxins, 'total Gram-bacteria')
The limit values published (based on the above groups) in the Dutch publication "Arbo-Informatieblad Biologische agentia" (nr 9) are presented in DOHSBase Compare. In this pubication it is indicated that beyond the published "limits" protective measures are prescribed.
The most appropriate method that is for measuring bacteria is the "modified Anderson N6 sampler", with various growth media.
