Fibrils

Fibrils

Fibrils are ribbon-like particulates, also known as ultra-fine fibres or subfibres). Fibrils have a diameter of 0,1 οΏ½m (micrometer) with a length of 0,3 to 0,4 οΏ½m. This is much smaller than fibres (see the caption on respirable fibres).

The Dutch Expert Committee on Occupational Safety of the Dutch Health Council has used the concept of fibrils when advising on the OEL for p-Aramid. p-Aramid fibres may have inhalable properties, but with a diameter normally ranging from 10 to 15 οΏ½m, they are too long to be respirable. But the fibrils, with much smaller diameter and length, are to be considered as respirable.
