Health Hazard Classification (TOX)

Health Hazard Classification (TOX)

In 1999 the British Health and Safety Executive (HSE) published a classification scheme in the framework of the COSHH Essentials. In this scheme the harmfulness of substances and their 'airworthiness' are arranged. The harm was not determined by Occupational Limit Values but with the much larger database of established (but now withdrawn) R-phrases of the European Union for irritating (Xi), harmful (Xn), corrosive (C), toxic (T, T+) properties of substances, along with classifications for carcinogenicity, mutagenicity and toxicity for reproduction. With the implementation of REACH and CLP a redefined version of COSHH Essentials was published in 2009, based on H-statements. More information on COSHH Essentials is here.

Besides the HSE, other institutions developed similar, but slightly different classification schemes.

With the parameter TOX you can choose which classification scheme you want to use in the Compare Mode. Therefore a pulldown menu is available in the Compare Tab: 3 different hazard classifications of substances are given. Default is the classification according to the German [IFA Spaltenmodell](../08_reference_documentation/EMKG%20(Inhalation) Hazard Groups.md), but you can also choose for the classification schemes of COSHH and the German [EMKG (Inhalation)](../08_reference_documentation/EMKG%20(Inhalation) Hazard Groups.md) to be used in the comparison of substances.

The choice is made by moving the cursor on the desired scheme and clicking. The result is immediately visible on the screen.

The value of TOX ranges from 0 to 4 (IFA Spaltenmodell) or 5 (COSHH Essentials and [EMKG (Inhalation)](../08_reference_documentation/EMKG%20(Inhalation) Hazard Groups.md)) (most harmful).
