MAK (def.)

MAK values

MAK = Maximale Arbeitsplatz Konzentration in Germany

In Germany 2 types of MAK lists are published:

  • The German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)) publishes anually the "MAK- and BAT-values list". The DFG's Permanent Senate Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compunds in the Work Area (MAK Commission) provides scientific advices. The MAK-commission is comparable to the Dutch DECOS of the European SCOEL.
  • The German Bundesminister fοΏ½r Arbeit publishes annualy the MAK-list ("Arbeitsplatzgrenzwerte") in the documentseries "Technische Regeln fur Gefahrstoffe" (TRGS) as TRGS 900. This list is substantially equal to the DFG-list. In the TRGS 900 also a socio-economic evaluation is carried out, and sometimes foreign OEL's are adopted as MAK.

However, there are different opinions on a number of substances, like the definitions of inhalable and respriable fractions. Also the STEL has different definitions. Next to the MAK-values, the DFG publishes also the BAT-values for biological monitoring, this is not done in TRGS 900.
