The Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW) promotes safety and health at work. The main aims of the Ministry's occupational safety and health policy are to prevent absence due to illness and occupational disability, and to encourage timely reintegration. The Directorate-General for Employment is responsible for policy in the following areas: terms of employment, labour law, working conditions and industrial relations. In addition, the director-general provides leadership to the directorates that form part of this directorate-general.

The Dutch Labour Inspectorate changed its name to Inspectorate SZW. It is part of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The Inspectorate SZW promotes compliance with labour protection laws and combats labour market fraud. Its priority is tackling serious violations of the law. The Inspectorate's working area includes all companies and commercial and non-commercial (private and public) establishments in the Netherlands.
Major duties of the Inspectorate SZW are:
- Supervision of Working Conditions (Working Conditions Act)
- Supervision of Working Hours (Working Hours Act)
- Supervision of Foreign Nationals (Employment) (Foreign Nationals [Employment] Act)
- Major Hazard Control (The Major Accidents [Risk] Decree 1999)
- Supervision of the Minimum Wage and Minimum Holiday Allowance Act (Minimum Wage and Minimum Holiday Allowance Act)
- Investigating industrial accidents
- Investigating complaints by employees about their working conditions, working hours or payment below the statutory minimum wage
- Enforcement and penalties
